NEW APPOINTMENTS AND REAPPOINTMENTS OF MEMBERS TO THE COMMITTEES ON CARCINOGENICITY AND MUTAGENICITY OF CHEMICALS IN FOOD, CONSUMER PRODUCTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Professor Liam Donaldson, the Government’s Chief Medical Officer, has announced today the new appointments and reappointments of members of the Committees on Carcinogenicity and Mutagenicity. The appointment will be for a term of three years from 1 April 2000 to 31 March 2003.
The full membership details are given in the Annexes A and B.

Notes to Editors
1. The Committee on Carcinogenicity (COC) and Committee on Mutagenicity (COM) are non-statutory independent advisory Committees which advise the CMO and, through the CMO, the government on a wide range of matters concerning chemicals in food, consumer products and the environment. These Committees will continue to operate on a UK basis and advise the Food Standards Agency as appropriate.

2. The Committees were first established in 1978 and the Chief Medical Officer appoints their members. Before 1978, advice was provided by sub-committees of the Committees on the Medical Aspects of Food Safety (COMA). In future COMA will be known as the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN).
3. The Committees meet 3 times a year. Members are unpaid, but receive an attendance fee of £86.50 and a reading fee of £22 per meeting. Chair are also unpaid , but receive £108 attendance fee and a reading fee
of £27 per meeting. All travel and subsistence expenses are reimbursed.
